Description
The Bible Besieged
Scripture & The Emergent Church, Charismatic, Hebrew Roots, Evangelical Contemplative, Movements
By Larry DeBruyn
Increasingly, evangelical-emergent leaders are viewing the Bible as “metaphor” – to be less than literal language from which the reader can subjectively derive personal spiritual meanings. This new interpretation method asserts that ignoring the nuances of metaphor makes the Bible unintelligible. Approaching the Bible only as metaphor demands assuming something about God’s communication to man which is at odds with the plain meaning of the language and structure of Holy Scripture. The fact that many contemporary evangelical leaders and Christians seek “fresh” revelations from God indicates that they no longer consider Holy Scripture to be sufficient and authoritative in matters of faith (2 Tim. 3:16).
